Are you a paleogeoscientist, macro-scale biologist, data scientist, programmer, or educator interested in learning how to access and harness large paleobiodiversity databases for your research, teaching, and public engagement?

Earth Life Consortium, ePANDDA, and EarthRates are looking for people with ideas for building new ways of researching, linking, and sharing data that showcases the changing face of life on Earth, at timescales ranging from hundreds of millions of years to the last several centuries.

Apply to take part in the Earth Life Consortium, ePANDDA, EarthRates Data Demonstration Derby to be held May 15-17th, 2018 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. This workshop will showcase and support hands-on experimentation with newly developed tools for discovering and accessing data across the Paleobiology Database, Neotoma Paleoecology Database, iDigBio, and allied resources. If accepted, your travel (up to a certain amount) and accommodation expenses will be reimbursed. We encourage early career scientists and applicants across a range of skill sets, backgrounds and disciplines. We also encourage individuals who value creative thinking, code sharing, and an interest in data-powered research and education.

The specific goals for the Demo Derby are:

  1. Provide an opportunity for scientists to learn about new resources for discovering, accessing, and analyzing geoscientific data;
  2. Provide a forum for users to discuss and begin developing new ideas or tools in a supportive environment;
  3. Create space for hands-on working time for individuals interested in building resources that help span Paleobiology Database, Neotoma, iDigBio, and allied cyberinfrastructure resources;
  4. Engage early career scientists and other scientific users with these resources and give them time to explore and develop research applications;
  5. Provide a forum for informal conversations and learning opportunities among scientific users, project teams, and developers.

Resources to be used include the Earth Life Consortium (http://earthlifeconsortium.org) ePANDDA (https://epandda.org), EarthCube resources (http://earthcube.org) and anything else that you feel may add value to your project.
