Islands: laboratories of biogeography threatened by anthropogenic extinction
Luís Valente is an evolutionary biologist and island biogeographer interested in biodiversity in isolated environments. He uses fieldwork, phylogenetics, modelling and genomics to reconstruct the assembly of biological communities on islands at macroevolutionary time scales. Originally from Portugal, he did his PhD in Madrid on diversification of plants in Mediterranean-climate hotspots, followed by postdocs in London and Berlin where he focused on global island biogeography of birds. He is a Senior Researcher at Naturalis Biodiversity Center and the University of Groningen (Netherlands).
